Introduction The Rich Text Format (often abbreviated RTF) is a proprietary document file format with published specification developed by Microsoft Corporation for cross-platform document interchange with Microsoft products. Most word processors are able to read and write some versions of RTF. Mobipocket SA is a French company incorporated in March 2000 that created the .mobi e-book file format and produces the Mobipocket Reader software for mobile phones, personal digital assistants (PDA) and desktop operating systems.
Technical details Unlike many word processing formats, RTF code can be human-readable: when an RTF file is viewed as a plain text file, the contained ASCII text is legible. The formatting code is not too distracting nor counter-intuitive, provided that the document's creator kept formatting concise. The Mobipocket e-book format is based on the Open eBook standard using XHTML and can include JavaScript and frames. It also supports native SQL queries to be used with embedded databases. The Amazon Kindle's AZW format is basically just the Mobipocket format with a slightly different serial number scheme, and .prc publications can be read directly on the Kindle. The Kindle AZW format also lacks some Mobipocket features such as JavaScript.
