Introduction The Open Document Format for Office Applications (ODF), also known as OpenDocument, is an XML-based file format for spreadsheets, charts, presentations and word processing documents. It was developed with the aim of providing an open, XML-based file format specification for office applications. The Rich Text Format (often abbreviated RTF) is a proprietary document file format with published specification developed by Microsoft Corporation for cross-platform document interchange with Microsoft products. Most word processors are able to read and write some versions of RTF.
Technical details The original OpenDocument format consists of an XML document that has as its root element. OpenDocument files can also take the format of a ZIP compressed archive containing a number of files and directories; these can contain binary content and benefit from ZIP's lossless compression to reduce file size. Unlike many word processing formats, RTF code can be human-readable: when an RTF file is viewed as a plain text file, the contained ASCII text is legible. The formatting code is not too distracting nor counter-intuitive, provided that the document's creator kept formatting concise.
